Trying to better himself wasn't something he felt he could do in just a few steps. Riku never was the kind of person to take it a little at a time: go big or go home. He had his own reservations, and asking for help was still hard, but... asking it from Lea wasn't as hard as it would be from Sora. Lea had been there to see his struggles, and he supported him through it.
Riku knew he could change, and Lea had helped with that.
